Located in the industrial District, Tecnoparque (technological park in Portuguese) has as one of its major goals, to turn the city into a national reference in Information Technology (IT), one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. For this, it provides support for innovative enterprises and connects the knowledge generated inside the universities with business and government, promoting inovation, enterprising culture and the sustainable development. Launched in 2013, the unit relies on public and private investment, through convention and participation in public edicts and incentive laws. The estimate is that in the next years the 11 business already installed, create 540 jobs and achieve an annual invoice of 40 million reals. The business belong to segments of illumination, electronics, sustainability, environment, mechanics, biotechnological input and IT - developing software adn hardware to safety, cattle breeding and commerce areas. Another area wich is present there is military training simulators, through the german armored factory KMW, which will give support to the Defense pole of Santa Maria, formed by the Army and the Air Force.
National Defense Pole
The only city in the country to have Vants (unnarmedaircraft) in its military headquarters and a center which prepares instructors for armored vehicles, Santa Maria is one of the most important defense poles, and also became a sector industry base of the german KMW and the implementation of Defense Pole Committee of Santa Maria (Comdefesa/SM) focused on stimulating companies that are able to provide equipment to the military forces contribute to that. The remarkable military apparatus avaliable in the city follows the defense national strategy, which is to modernize the equipment and the systems in use, prioritizing the development of their own technology.
At the garrison of Santa Maria, 3rd Division Army Command(3rd DE), the locar Air Base (BASM) and an expressive number of military organizations are located , gathering one of the biggest military forces of the country, with more than 20 thousand men, between the land force and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). Because of its strategic geographical position and inportance in military terms, in the next three years, the city will receive half billion reals from federal government for new equipment and the building of South Assessnebt and Dressage Center (CAA-Sul) - a set of 30 buildings -, which should be ready in 2018. There, at least 850 military men should train 1.5 thousand Brazilian and foreigner military men per month using the battle simulators.
3rd Division Army
The 3rd Division Army (3rd DE) is one of the units with higher fire power of the Brazilian ground force. Subordinated to the South Military Command (CMS), it includes the 1st and the 2nd Mechanized Cavalry Brigade, the 6th Armored Infantary Brigade and the Division Artillery/3. Also in the city is the Sipporting Fire Simmulator (SAFO), in the Instruction Field of Santa Maria (CISM), with software and machinery to simulate battles with armored vehicles and it is responsile for the military specialization and development of the military doctrine in the technical and tactical employment of those vehicles.
An inportant part of the squadrons of fighter jets from FAB is in Santa Maria, as well as a squadron of rotating wings aircrafts. It is also the city to where the first subsonic fighter jets A-1 (AMX) came, and they were updated, becoming the main fighter jets to operate in the country. One of the different aspects is that the BASM is the only unit of the country to house Vants - unmanned aircraft - ready for military use. The Vants are part of the Hórus Squadron, created in 2011 to develop the doctrine for aircraft use, which has already been employed in important operations of defense borders, at Rio+20 Conference and the World Cup. Apart from Hermes 450, made in Israelm in 2013 updated versions of Vants were delivered, allowing an even greater data gain through the radars of synthetic opening (SAR), that brought a new world of possibilities in tasks of long term surveillance.
National Institute for Space Research
The Southern Regional Space Research Center, from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE-CRS) was established in 1996 and strengthened by the establishment of national decentralization of the institution policy. In Santa Maria, the unit develops dozens of researches through agreements and partnerships for technical and scientific collaboration. In one of them, the CRS-INPE and the UFSM made a mark for the national aerospace industry, to develop the first Brazilian nanossatellite (NanoSatC-BR1), launched in June of 2014. The CRS-INPE diffuses the space technology in the south region in he areas of engineering, technology and informatics, Earth observations, climate and weather and earth, solar system and exterior space sciences. It also houses the Antarctic Project from INPE and Campus Brazil, from the Regional Centre for Space Science Education and Technology for Latin America and the Caribbean. The researchers in Antarctic focus on dynamic atmosphere, ozone layer, meteorology, global warming, greenhouse gases, ultraviolet radiation, sun-atmosphere relation, transport of polution, oceanography and ocean-atmosphere relation, offering data for the study of Global Changes. In addition, receptive wires for gathering and distribution of meteorological data, satellite images and letters for analyses of weather to all Latin America, are installed in the unit.
